Auto Transmission FAQs

It is important for a vehicle’s transmission to be serviced on a regular basis.

  • The right time for servicing is either every 12th month or every 20,000 kms after 80,000 kms, whichever occurs first.
  • Regular servicing will ensure that the transmission system is thoroughly checked, and minor repairs are fixed before they cause any damage.
  • Transmissions need to be serviced before the car-breaks down - never wait for a problem to occur.
  • We at Aspley Auto Service Centre, notify all our customers every month as a reminder for their vehicle’s servicing, when due.
All the components of the transmission are quite sensitive like filter and should only be serviced by an automotive expert at regular interval of 20,000kms after the first 80,000kms, else, you can lose your vehicle’s manufacturer warranty.
A filter does not allow unwanted particles to enter the transmission box, which results in jamming the filter. Therefore, it is important to get the filter serviced or replaced every time before filling up new oil.
Every vehicle manufacturer does not want its customers to touch sensitive sections of machinery or it can void the manufacturer’s warranty. Therefore, a qualified automotive mechanic is recommended.
It depends on the leakage location. There are multiple components in transmission unit from where oil can leak i.e., the pump, shift lever seal, kick down seal, electrical connections, governor cover, speedometer, rear output seal or axle seals, servo covers, filler tube, throttle cable, pan, side cover, cooler lines, cooler and differential cover on front wheel drives.
Without inspecting the leakage and knowing the make and model of the vehicle, it will be difficult for us to provide you the exact repairing cost.
Yes, you can drive if the oil leak is minor but only for some distance. You will have to refill the oil or else, your car will break-down completely, or it can cause severe damage to your vehicle’s transmission unit.
Overfilling of fluid in transmission units can cause abnormal working of machinery. Fluid can spill-out from different sections which can damage other components. Overall, it can cost you a lot.
Every transmission unit has multiple vents to prevent creating pressure inside. Overfilling can raise the fluid level above the recommended level which can cause leakage of fluid from the vents. However, it will not be creating pressure inside, which can cause any damage to seal.

  • Check the level of fluid and its condition regularly.
  • Get leaks/damages repaired promptly.
  • If your vehicle is equipped with automatic transmission, then regular service is quite important.
  • Add an auxiliary cooler if the vehicle is used for towing.
Full synthetic fluid (oil) may benefit some applications by lowering operating temperature resulting in a good transmission’s life, but not all transmissions can use the synthetic fluid. Consider getting accurate advice from Aspley Auto Service centre.
Keep the engine running to make the engine achieve the required temperature and simply pull-out the yellow coloured dipstick. Check both the ends of the dipstick to measure the level of fluid. Consider measuring 2-3 times to get accurate results.
It is necessary to measure multiple times as in some cases, the dipstick gives a false reading. Due to the high temperature of the engine, the fluid’s volume expands which results in wrong fluid measurement.
If you have added transmission fluid to the existing fluid, then follow the same process to measure its level.
If there is a leakage, it means the level of fluid is low as the transmission does not consume fluid. Consider getting leakage diagnosed and fixed by Aspley Auto Service Centre to prevent serious problems.
As every vehicle is different and every car service is different, it is difficult to determine the time your car service will take. We will try our best to complete your vehicle service and get it back on the road as quickly as possible for you.
The cost of your car service will depend on the amount and type of oil required in addition to the cost of a standard service of your vehicle. Moreover, it depends on the condition of the other parts if they need a replacement or not.
